Hiking in the Oberpinzgau - an experience jam-packed with variety

The green and gentle slate mountains of the Kitzbühel Alps in the north and the rugged 3,000-meter peaks of the Hohe Tauern National Park to the south – hikers love the Oberpinzgau for the rich diversity of its alpine landscapes, inter-linked by countless marked hiking trails. Picturesque streams, crystal-clear mountain tarns and wild waterfalls draw the casual hiker and intrepid mountaineer alike. Once at your destination, you are rewarded by imposing views of the valleys and mountain ranges.

Whatever your heart desires - hikes to please everyone´s taste.

The towns of Mittersill, Hollersbach and Stuhlfelden, are ideal bases for many hikes and excursions. From here, you can head out straight to Mittersill’s most popular mountain, the Pihapper Spitze (elev. 2,513m). It is famous for its magnificent views of the Salzach Valley, the northern Limestone Alps and the Felber Valley. One particularly beautiful trail takes you from the Felbertal, along the shores of the Hintersee (natural monument, elev. 1,313m) to the St. Pöltner Hut (2,481 m). We know that as early as 2,000 BC, this route over the Felbertauern, characterized by its unique landscapes flecked by mountain lakes, was used by the Celts as a way to make the crossing to the south. Later came the Romans, for whom it served as a trade route. Families with small children can also reach the Hintersee by car. With a little luck, you will be able to spot wild chamois – not without reason is the nearby inn called the “Gamsblick” (= “Chamois View”).
Casual hikers can explore the Wasenmoos nature sanctuary in the Kitzbühel Alps. At an elevation of 1,240 meters above sea level there is a wetland area, characterized by its exceptionally idyllic landscapes and serving as a habitat for rare plant and animal species. The rugged, ice-covered 3,000-meter crags of the Hohe Tauern National Park await experienced mountaineers who come well equipped and in good physical condition. If who wish to ascend into the remote world of glaciers, you should definitely engage the services of an expert local climber, even during the planning stages.
