Mittersill
The austrian market town of Mittersill, located on the upper reaches of the Salzach, is the main community and focal point of the Oberpinzgau region.

In the 12th century, the Pinzgau was still a part of the Duchy of Bavaria, remaining so until the Bavarian dukes granted the Oberpinzgau shire as a feudal fief to the Earls of Lechsgmünd. Prior to 1180, the new rulers had already built Mittersill Castle on the northern slopes of the Salzach Valley, perched above the commercially and strategically important north-south link from Pass Thurn to the Felbertauern.

Mittersill´s geographically advantageous location explains the rise and development of the town in the Middles Ages.

Set at the intersection of major trade arteries through the Salzach Valley on the north-south link between Bavaria and Italy, "Mittersele", under the protection of the castle, gained great importance as a trans-shipping center.

The trade route along the Felbertauern enjoyed similar advantages: with the sudden growth of commercial traffic in the 12th and 13th centuries, it experienced a period which is seen nowadays as the heyday of the packer trade. The packers primarily brought valuable salt to the south, while returning to the north with wines from Friuli and the Adige Valley.

It is presumed that Mittersill already held market rights during the days of the earls, though this was first documented only in 1348. In the market charter issued by Archbishop Ortolf in 1357, the citizens of Mittersill are granted the right to engage in all kinds of commerce and provide necessary lodgings, as well as to hold annual fairs, within the castle keep.

With its central location between the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Kitzbühel Alps, today´s small mountain community of Mittersill is a popular holiday town.
