The village of Hollersbach is located in the SalzburgerLand at the entrance to the Hollersbach Valley and is a part of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

The terraces on the sunny side which, like the flat areas on the Hach and the Reissboden on the shady side of the valley, represent remnants of the original Salzach Valley, were probably settled at a very early date. A potter´s wheel, found at the Wimmbauer Farm in 1853, points to the existence of a Roman settlement. In the 7th century, Bavarian settlers are presumed to have passed from Tyrol over the Thurn Pass. This is born out by a style fofhouse found in Hollersbach and typical of the entire Pinzgau region, known as the "Single-Roof Farm".

The earliest documentation of the community´s existence dates from 1150, when a certain Ortolf von Hollersbach an official for Bavaria´s Duke Heinrich von Frontenhausen, transfers title to his estate on the Wiesberg (near Wald-im-Pinzgau) to the Salzburg abbey of St. Peter´s. He is the first documented member of Lords of Hollersbach, whose family seat was in the Scharrertum which, sadly, no longer exists. A member of this land-owning family is also held to be the founder of Hollersbach church, first mentioned in 1348.

From the late middle ages on, mining in Hollersbach became increasingly important. The Hollersbach Zinc & Lead Works were founded in 1908. But in 1945, mining operations finally ceased for good.

Today, the parish of Hollersbach, which has existed as an independent community since 1891, is a popular base for a variety of hikes and tours of the surrounding mountains.
