The Schösswend Gorge is the impressive result of a natural spectacle which has continued for thousands of years. Since the Ice Age, the flowing waters of the Felber stream have been sculpting the resistant rocks of the narrow Felber Valley. Passing over numerous waterfalls, both big and small, the water pushes its way powerfully forwards, creating funnel- and basin-shaped depressions in the rock massif. These fascinating waters, with their unusual erosion patterns, were declared a natural monument in 1983. They make for a particularly imposing sight when the volume of water is high, making this gorge a truly remarkable excursion destination.
The Schösswend Gorge is easy to reach from the road and readily accessible via pathways. From there, a trail takes hikers out to the Tauernhaus Spital or to the Meilinger Alm. After a brief break for well-earned rest and refreshments, we may wish to carry on hiking towards yet another rewarding destination: Lake Hintersee and the Gamsblick Hut.
